Hyderabad: Sify Technologies is making significant investments in renewable energy. The company recently entered into power purchase agreements (PPAs) with Vibrant Energy Holdings for 231 MW of solar and wind energy capacity to power the company’s Mumbai hyperscale data center. This renewable energy effort will attract an investment of Rs 1,250 crore.
The company is minimising its dependence on fossil fuels to power its data centers, with an aim to reduce its carbon footprint. By simultaneously investing in both solar and wind energy, Sify will soon be able to deliver most of the power required for its flagship data centers in Mumbai from renewable sources and intends to continue increasing renewable adoption across its nationwide footprint.
Raju Vegesna, chairman, Sify said, with the burgeoning data-centric transformation of Indian businesses, investing in clean energy sources to fuel this transformation is going to be key.
Globally, data centers sector is seeing growth and within APAC region, India is witnessing rapid strides backed by the government’s push in the consecutive budgets as well as an increase in digital transformation across industries.
M P Vijay Kumar, CFO, Sify, said, this shift to renewables will deliver clear economic advantages, but it is also about proving the viability of adopting green energy solutions at an industrial scale.
When asked how the shift to renewables impacts cost of implementation, Vijay Kumar said, “There is no incremental cost in shifting from fossil fuel-based data centers to renewable energy. We will continue to adopt renewable energy in existing centres as well as greenfield centres that will come up in future.”
Srini Viswanathan, CEO, Vibrant Energy, said, Vibrant will continue to work with Sify to support them in their 100 per cent renewable energy goals and discussions are on to explore renewable energy in existing and future facilities that will come up in the next 3-4 years.
Sify has 11 data centers with over 80 MW capacity and is on track to add 200 MW in next four years.
