Ahmedabad: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a British national of Indian origin and the lone survivor of the devastating Air India crash. Ramesh, who is recovering from injuries sustained in the accident, is receiving excellent medical care at a local hospital.
During his meeting with the Prime Minister, Ramesh recounted the horrifying moments of that day. He revealed that he was traveling with his brother Ajay Kumar Rakesh, who unfortunately did not survive the crash. “My brother was seated in a different row and didn’t survive. I still don’t know how I made it out alive,” he said. Reflecting on the incident, Ramesh described how he initially believed he was going to die as he witnessed the chaos; the deafening noise, the intense impact, and the ensuing fire. In what seemed like a miracle, he found a small space that enabled him to escape.
Ramesh narrated that shortly after takeoff, the aircraft appeared to stall briefly. Without warning, it nosedived and crashed into a building. Fortunately, he was on the opposite side from where the plane hit, a crucial factor in his survival. The ill-fated Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner was en route to London when it met disaster just three kilometers from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.
The crash occurred around 1:30 pm, just as students of BJ Medical College had gathered for lunch in their mess-cum-dining hall. The hostel, which bore the brunt of the impact, was crowded with young MBBS students, leaving little time for reaction when the tragedy struck. In response, authorities have initiated a massive rescue and identification operation. As investigators comb through the debris to determine the cause behind one of India’s deadliest aviation tragedies in recent memory, efforts are underway to hand over bodies to grieving families.
Exploring more about the incident’s impact on the community could lead to discussions on safety improvements in aviation protocols and emergency response strategies in densely populated areas. There is also scope to examine the psychological effects on survivors and first responders and how communities rebuild after such tragedies.
