Hyderabad: Orthopaedic surgeons at Yashoda Hospital, Somajiguda, have conducted a combination of three complex procedures to repair and provide stability to the left knee of a 26-year-old patient from Somalia.
The complex surgery performed on Abdikarim Ahmed Abdi involved a meniscal transplantation procedure, revision of ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) and IT band tenodesis, all aimed to treat severe pain and instability of the left knee.
The meniscus is a C-shaped cushion of cartilage in the knee joint, and to conduct its transplantation, surgeons sourced a matching cadaver meniscal graft from Musculoskeletal Transplant Foundation, the US, on June 29.
The patient underwent surgery on June 30, and the procedure consisted of Meniscal Allograft Transplantation with ACL reconstruction with a graft and IT band tenodesis. “After the surgery, the patient is now put on a knee brace for the first six weeks and will not be allowed to strain the leg for as much duration. The patient will undergo a long rehab to build muscle strength,” Dr G Shashi Kanth, a senior orthopaedic surgeon who led the surgery, said.
Other surgeons who were involved in the procedure included Dr G Vedaprakash, Dr Praveen Mereddy and Dr RA Purnachandra Tejaswi.
