Hyderabad: In a rare and complex surgery, the surgeons at the State-run Gandhi Hospital have successfully removed an enlarged spleen weighing 2.8 kilograms and 45 cm in length, from a 43-year-old woman, a resident of Warasiguda.
The woman was suffering from massive splenomegaly (enlarged spleen) and pancytopenia, which led to severe reduction in red cells, white cells, and platelets.
The patient approached Gandhi Hospital after suffering from abdominal pain for three months and abdominal swelling for one month. Upon examination, doctors discovered that her spleen had grown significantly, extending below the navel.
Tests confirmed pancytopenia, a condition where all three major blood cell components drop to dangerously low levels, making any surgical intervention extremely risky.
A medical team led by senior surgeon Dr. Sunil and anesthesiologist Dr. Murali successfully performed a rare and highly complex splenectomy (surgical removal of the spleen) at Gandhi Hospital.
The hospital’s medical team reported that the patient’s health is steadily improving; she is currently stable and recovering well. Doctors noted that while such cases are incredibly challenging, timely surgical intervention is critical for patient survival.
