Hyderabad: The upstream stretch of the Godavari River, above its confluence with the Pranahita River, which had remained dry until now, is experiencing heavy flooding due to widespread rainfall in its catchment area.
The Sriram Sagar Project (SRSP) in Telangana has finally received long-awaited inflows, with water levels reaching 1.51 lakh cusecs. A flood alert has been issued, and preparations are underway to lift the project’s crest gates to release excess floodwaters.
The SRSP, with an original gross storage capacity of 90 TMC, can retain only 72 TMC due to operational constraints and siltation. Currently, the project is releasing over 10,000 cusecs to the Flood Flow Canal, while the Kakatiya Canal is receiving approximately 5,000 cusecs.
The SRSP Stage I ayacut irrigates approximately 9.68 lakh acres across the Kakatiya, Saraswati, and Laxmi canals, benefiting the erstwhile districts of Karimnagar, Warangal, and Nizamabad. Additionally, the project supports irrigation for a total of around 15 lakh acres across its stages and canal systems.
The Pranahita River, a major tributary, is contributing heavily to the Godavari’s flood flows, adding over 4.5 lakh cusecs to the surging waters.
