Hyderabad: TPCC president N Uttam Kumar Reddy has sought Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan’s intervention for postponement of elections to seven ULBs, citing increasing Corona cases across the State.
In a letter to the Governor on Friday, the TPCC president said: “Right from hasty preparation of electoral rolls to hurried allocation of reservations to continuance of municipal elections, the State Election Commission (SEC) has plunged to new low in conduct of free and fair elections.”
The present SEC has discontinued the practice of holding all party meetings before any local body elections, he alleged that the election schedule notification and reservations were announced hurriedly on April 15 and it was announced that nominations would start the very next day with polling to be held on April 30.
“It is clear that the SEC was following the directives of their political masters to try and finish polling on April 30, so that voters are not influenced by the likely adverse result for TRS in Nagarjunasagar by-election,” Uttam Kumar Reddy said.
As the number of infections and deaths rose to new record highs in the country and in the State, the High Court of Telangana observed that the SEC was the body concerned to decide postponement of municipal elections, he said, adding that instead of deciding themselves on postponement of polls, the SEC referred to the Government of Telangana.
“By continuing the elections, the SEC is endangering the lives of lakhs of voters in the two municipal corporations and five municipalities,” Uttam Kumar Reddy said and sought the Governor ‘s intervention in stopping the election process.
