Hyderabad: The Telangana Information Technology and Industries Department, Principal Secretary, Jayesh Ranjan has been instrumental in formulating many policies and schemes for the State government.
The 1992 batch IAS officer was the topper of his batch and he had prepared for the exam for just one year with the least expectation of cracking it in the first attempt. Working in Telangana for more than a decade now, Jayesh Ranjan shares his views with Telangana Today on how to prepare for the competitive exams.
Practice is important
Whenever one is preparing, it is important to not just read but also write down the answers. It is advised that aspirants practice writing answers to model questions. One must put their learnings on paper to increase mind and body coordination. This will be helpful when one writes the exam.
Concentrate on working smart
While preparing for competitive exams, one must always differentiate between working hard and working smart. Aspirants should always concentrate on working smart which means that one must always prepare more than what is being taught in the coaching classes. Everyone attends these classes and the answers would be similar, however, if one has to differentiate themselves from others then they must work that extra bit. Other than reading up on material provided by these classes, aspirants must read original books in their subject of choice if they aim to secure a higher rank.
Multiple revisions are a must
Many studies have shown that most of us suffer from memory loss. So, if one wants to remember what they have learned and/or studied then revision is a must. Let’s say, one has studied a chapter the night before, it is always advised to study the same again the next morning. Then after three days, do another revision and after seven days one must do the third revision. This method helps one to remember whatever they have studied clearly and it is a scientifically proven method.
Relaxation is must for candidates
While studying for long hours is important, our body also requires relaxation and sleep. So, aspirants must take out time for a good amount of sleep along with not compromising on recreation activities like running, jogging, yoga, and any other sports of their choice.
Do not overstrain yourself
One must also have the least expectations from these competitive examinations and one must take these as a learning experience and not get overstrained. These are not a life and death situation and even if a candidate doesn’t clear these examinations there are ample opportunities available outside. In my opinion, an aspirant must not spend more than 2-2.5 years preparing for these competitive examinations.
