Hyderabad: After the Supreme Court halted all developmental works in the forested area of Kancha Gachibowli on Thursday, the University of Hyderabad (UoH) students concluded their protests and relay hunger strike, which they commenced earlier today.
“Due to stay and the judgement by SC, we have concluded the protests and the relay hunger strike,” read a statement from the students.
As the SC halted the works, the university campus erupted in jubilant celebrations. Despite the heavy rain that lashed the city, many students gathered outside the University main gate, and sang songs against the State government and celebrated their first victory.
The State government recently as part of the pre-auctioning process of the 400 acres of land in Kancha Gachibowli, abutting the UoH campus, commenced clearing the forested land. In a span of two-three days, nearly 100 acres of land was cleared of trees and plants besides levelling.
Ever since the decision to auction the land was announced, students vehemently opposed and protested the move. Earlier in the day, around 20 students, including UoH Students Union general secretary Nihad Sulaiman, sat on relay hunger strike at the university north gate demanding immediate cessation of forest destruction and removal of bulldozers from the university campus.
