Peddapalli: The election of chairman and vice-chairman for the Sultanabad municipality has been postponed due to lack of quorum. Out of 15 wards, Indian National Congress won 12, while one seat each was won by Bharatiya Rashtra Samithi, Bharatiya Janata Party and All India Forward Bloc. As all 12 Congress members were absent from the meeting, the election of chairman and vice-chairman was postponed. Infighting among Congress leaders over the selection of a candidate for the chairman post is said to be the reason for the ruling party councillors staying away from the meeting.
It is learnt that three candidates, Birudu Radhakrishna, son of former MLA Birudu Rajamallu, Anthati Pushpalatha, wife of district libraries chairman Annaiah Goud, and Gajula Rajamallu, husband of former municipal chairman Gajula Lakshmi, are competing for the chairman post. As they failed to come to an understanding, all the Congress councillors stayed away from the meeting.
Quorum is mandatory to conduct voting. There was no quorum as all Congress councillors did not attend the meeting. Therefore, returning officer and commissioner Ramesh postponed the meeting to Tuesday.
