Suryapet: Suryapet police filed cases against five students of second year MBBS from Government Medical College here under sections 448, 323, 504 and 506 of the Anti-Ragging Act and took them into custody for ragging a junior student.
The police rescued the first year student after receiving a call on the night of January 1, saying that a group of senior students were ragging him in Boys hostel of Government Medical College in Kasthuri Bazar in the town.
Based on the written complaint filed by Viskampuri Sai Kumar, the first year student, police filed cases against the five senior students and took them into custody on Sunday night.
Superintendent of Police Rajendra Prasad said that cases have been filed against five senior students of MBBS based on the complaint lodged by Sai Kumar. As the victim mentioned in the complaint that 25 to 30 seniors were present in his room during gthe ragging, the names of the seniors identified by Sai Kumar would also be included in the case later, he added. Anti-Ragging Committee was not set up in the college as per the rules, he added.
Reminding that the students’ hostel was located just one km away from the college, he said lack of supervision by the staff led to the incident.
Principal of Government Medical College of Suryapet Dr C V Sarada said that committee was set up comprising heads of five departments in the college to inquire into the ragging incident. Based on the report of the committee, action would be taken against the senior students involved in the incident. The committee will submit its report in one or two days, she added.
In the complaint, Sai Kumar alleged that 25 to 30 senior students came to his room in the hostel and ordered him to remove his clothes and took mobile video shots of him. Senior student Sravan mentally and physically tortured him for two hours on the night of January 1. They also tried to cut his hair. He managed to escape from the senior students, hide in another room and called up his father. Chanikya, Soheb, Insaf Khan, Sravan and Shahabaz were among the senior students who ragged him.
