Farmers have been complaining that traders were buying cotton below the minimum support price (MSP) even as their produce met the requisite moisture content conditions. They alleged that the negligence of agriculture and marketing officials was proving costly for them.

Farmers, who raised the commercial cotton crop expecting they would be to make profits by selling the cotton produce at remunerative price this year, are facing one or other problems to sell cotton produce in the district.

Adilabad district Agro Industries Association president Raju Chintawar told ‘Telangana Today’ that the CCI set a cap on the quantity of cotton being procured by the ginning mills.

The paddy purchases at the local procurement centre continued to be tardy and the stocks moved to the yards were being rejected repeatedly on the pretext that the moisture content was above the permissible levels, the farmers said.

Harish Rao said that the government had failed to make arrangements to purchase paddy, cotton, and maize, forcing farmers to sell their produce to middlemen at a much cheaper rate than the MSP.

Ramanna alleged that the government colluded with the private traders and was procuring the cotton produce. It was cheating the farmers by offering a nominal minimum support price (MSP) to the cotton.
