Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka has urged banks to move beyond conventional lending and proactively reach farmers to ensure timely credit and boost rural incomes. Addressing the SLBC meeting, he stressed that banking success should be measured by outcomes such as higher farm productivity, new industries and jobs.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay announced additional relief for farmers by fully waiving cooperative farm loans up to Rs 75,000 and providing partial relief on higher loans. The measure will cost the state Rs 953 crore and benefit over 1.38 lakh farmers
A 60-year-old farmer, Gadala Mondi, died by suicide in Chennur due to mounting agricultural debts. Locals criticised Labour Minister Vivek Venkatswamy for unfulfilled promises to prevent flooding and demanded compensation and support for struggling farmers.
The farmers, who borrowed more than Rs.2 lakh, had repaid the additional amount to banks, but many were yet to get the waiver. They also said majority of farmers in the village had not yet got the loan waiver.
