Thousands of mourners thronged the streets of Hyderabad on Friday to participate in the annual Bibi ka Alam procession marking Youm-e-Ashoora, the 10th day of Muharram. The city observed solemn rituals with prayers, food distribution, and acts of charity in remembrance of Hazrat Imam Hussain’s martyrdom at Karbala.
The Hyderabad Traffic Police have imposed traffic restrictions and diversions in the old city on Friday for the historic Bibi-ka-Alam procession. The curbs will be in place from 12 pm to 10 pm, with vehicles and buses rerouted through alternative paths.
The six black velvet pouches adorning Hyderabad's Bibi-ka-Alam have intrigued devotees for generations. Historians believe they contain priceless jewels gifted by the Nizams, while the alam itself houses a sacred relic linked to Hazrat Bibi Fatima and Islamic history.
Organisers of the Bibi ka Alam procession, in coordination with Hyderabad City Police, conducted a trial run in the Old City on Saturday. Elephant Sreedevi, brought from Kerala, traversed the traditional route ahead of the Muharram procession scheduled for June 26.
PETA India and Zahrah S. Khan have proposed using a mechanical elephant for Hyderabad’s Bibi-ka-Alam Muharram procession, replacing live animals traditionally rented from other states. The initiative aims to prevent animal suffering and improve public safety during large gatherings.
The procession will start at 1 pm and pass through Bibi-ka-Alawa, Pather ka Makaan, Shaik Faiz Kaman, Yakutpura Road, Alijah Kotla, Charminar, Panjesha, Mandi Mir Alam, Zehranagar, Darulshifa and reach Chaderghat in the evening
