Telangana has accelerated scientific restoration of Kaleshwaram barrages. Advanced tests and studies are under way, with designs to be finalised before monsoon. Repairs will begin after rains, aiming to ensure long-term structural safety.
Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy directed officials to coordinate with technical institutions and design teams to accelerate rehabilitation works on the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme barrages. He stressed the need for aligning CWPRS testing schedules with project designers to ensure timely validation.
The Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project (KLIP) is unlikely to deliver irrigation benefits before 2027, as rehabilitation of the Medigadda, Annaram, and Sundilla barrages faces delays. Farmers in Karimnagar and Warangal are protesting after six crop seasons have been skipped, with 2,350 TMC of Godavari flows wasted.
The Medigadda barrage, a key asset of the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project, has weathered yet another intense flood season in 2025, handling over 9 lakh cusecs of Godavari flow. While repairs to Block 7 remain pending since a 2023 pier subsidence incident, the barrage’s independent block design and reinforced foundations have ensured operational stability.
The team’s findings will be crucial for the urgent repairs ordered by the National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA) to safeguard the structural integrity of this vital project
As limited work time is available, the Irrigation Department officials have asked the L&T that has been executing the interim works as recommended by the NDSA, to step up the pace of operations.
