Turkey's toll from the quake is continuing to rise, with Environment Minister Murat Kurum reporting 83 dead.

The Friday afternoon earthquake, which the Istanbul-based Kandilli Institute said had a magnitude of 6.9, was centered in the Aegean northeast of Samos.

As per Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency, the death toll stands at 17 so far, with 709 injured.
