The conflict between Israel and Iran has dominated headlines, but the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza must not be pushed into the shadows, said Guterres. "The ceasefire achieved between Iran and Israel offers hope. And hope is more needed than ever. So it is time to find the political courage for a ceasefire in Gaza."
Speaking at the UN headquarters in New York, Guterres warned on Tuesday that the Middle East "is a powder keg with many parties holding the match." He noted that he had warned for months about the risk of the conflict spreading, adding that the situation in the occupied West Bank is "boiling over," with attacks in Lebanon threatening the entire region.
"The international community must urgently work together to prevent any actions that could push the Middle East over the edge, with devastating consequences for civilians," said UN chief's Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric
In response to a question from a Bangladeshi journalist during his daily briefing on Thursday, he expressed the hope that in India, as in any country holding elections, all citizens' rights, including political and civil rights, would be safeguarded, and that everyone could vote in a free and fair atmosphere.
UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric stated that Guterres underscored the protection of hospitals, clinics, medical personnel, and UN premises under international law.
