A 27-year-old Hyderabad woman who had suffered four miscarriages due to a weak uterus sought help at KIMS Hospitals. Despite being nine weeks pregnant at the time, doctors waited until 12 weeks to perform a laparoscopic procedure to strengthen her uterus. The surgery successfully provided the support needed to carry the baby to term, said Dr. Cheepurupalli Vasundhara, Senior Gynecologist at KIMS.
Fibroids are non-cancerous growths that form in or on the uterus, varying in size and number. While MRI scans showed the patient had seven fibroids, the surgical team encountered an unexpected challenge. "As we operated, fibroids began appearing in large numbers," explained Dr. Prabha Agrawal, a gynecologist at Care Hospitals, Hitec City.
The experiment, carried out by researchers at the US biotech company eGenesis and Harvard Medical School, may one day develop to be a potential solution to the global shortage of donors for patients with organ failure.
