Telangana is facing growing water stress after a deficient monsoon left reservoir storage sharply below last year’s levels. With 235 mandals declared drought-hit, the State faces mounting challenges over irrigation, drinking water, groundwater dependence and inter-State Krishna and Godavari water management
Telangana is facing growing drinking water concerns as reservoir stocks and groundwater levels decline amid deficient monsoon rainfall. Several key reservoirs are nearing dead-storage levels, while reduced inflows and depleted tanks could intensify pressure on drinking water supplies in coming months
Telangana is likely to receive nearly 25 per cent below-normal seasonal rainfall, according to the ECMWF outlook. With utilisable storage in Krishna and Godavari reservoirs at critically low levels, available water is expected to be sufficient mainly for drinking unless monsoon inflows improve.
Continuous rains have brought heavy inflows to major Telangana irrigation projects, with Nagarjuna Sagar, Srisailam, Jurala, Musi, and Sriram Sagar nearing full capacity as floodwaters steadily raise storage levels across reservoirs.
