After Uttarakhand, Gujarat, and Assam pass UCC bills, Union Law Minister asserts civil laws must apply equally to all citizens regardless of religion

The Assam government tabled the Uniform Civil Code Bill 2026, banning polygamy and mandating registration of live-in relationships. Opposition parties demanded wider consultation, while the Bill excludes Scheduled Tribes and aims to simplify marriage, divorce, succession, and relationship laws

The Assam Cabinet has approved implementation of the Uniform Civil Code, with tribal communities exempted from its scope. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the bill would be introduced in the legislative assembly on May 26 and cover marriage, succession and divorce registration
