The smoke and ash from the fire on Evia, a rugged island of forests and coves almost touching the Greek mainland, blocked out the sun, turning the sky orange.

Taking cognizance of increasing forest fire in the state, Uttarakhand High Court on April 6 ordered Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) Rajiv Bhartari to appear before it.

There was no immediate report of injuries. Approximately 100 people were assigned to fight the fire.

Armed with blowers, beaters and other equipment, the two teams comprising five members each, swung into action and controlled the fire from spreading further.

"The helicopter is equipped with Bambi Bucket for fire fighting in Dzukou Valley near Kohima," he added.

"Those species include 19 per cent of birds, 16 per cent of mammals, 17 per cent of dragonflies and 19 per cent of legumes that are classified as critically endangered, endangered or vulnerable," said lead author, Luke Kelly
