A couple was beaten and burnt alive by villagers in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district after being accused of witchcraft. Police have launched an investigation and registered cases under the BNS, reiterating that witch-hunting is a criminal offence in the state.

Reports indicate that villagers passing through the forest near Bamandlapali spotted around ten individuals, including transgender persons, preparing for a ritual with puja materials. Alarmed, they notified other villagers, who quickly arrived at the scene and apprehended those performing the puja.
Tribal couple have been identified as Pandu Hembram (62) and his wife Parvati Hembram (52), and they passed away after being severely beaten up by the locals.
Police exhumed the body out of a pit five feet deep and the officials and the villagers present there said that they could see that the hands and legs were tied up.
