Hyderabad: The Telangana Congress government’s assurance of a District Selection Committee (DSC) notification to the unemployed youth in the month of February 2025 continues to remain unfulfilled, even as the Education department has over 19,000 teacher vacancies in the government and local body schools across the State.

As per information available with the department, there are a staggering 19,017 teacher vacancies, with 10,395 vacancies alone for Secondary Grade Teachers (SGTs) and 4,484 school assistants in different subjects. This academic year, 1,06,566 teachers are working compared to the sanctioned strength of 1,25,583.

The government had released in the Assembly a job calendar for 20 different recruitment examinations, with DSC notification scheduled for February 2025, announced in August 2024. Nearly nine months have passed since the assured month, yet there is no word on the notification, leaving aspirants in a state of uncertainty as to when the recruitment will take place.

“After recent teacher transfers and promotions, we believe there might be around 25,000 vacancies alone in the SGT and SA cadre. During the elections, the Congress party promised a mega DSC notification but it remains as (just) another broken promise,” said Bhukya Kumar Naik, president Telangana BEd Candidates Association.

It may be recalled that the then BRS government issued the DSC notification for 5,089 teacher vacancies. This notification was supplemented with another 5,973 vacancies, taking the total to 11,062 vacancies while the Congress party during assembly elections assured a mega DSC with 20,000 vacancies.

“We (have) lost trust in the government as it failed to release new job notifications, despite making clear assurances of releasing notifications for two lakh vacancies within one year during the assembly elections,” said Janardhan A, chairman Telangana Unemployed JAC.

According to department sources, teachers are more in number due to declining enrollment in the last couple of years. As per GO MS No. 25 order, which mandates redistribution of teachers based on the enrollment figures, 24,227 government and local body schools require 99,076 teachers.
