Teacher shortage hits government schools in Telangana’s Palamuru region

Government schools in several Telangana districts are facing a shortage of teachers, with more than 1,000 posts reportedly required across four districts and 600 Urdu-medium teachers needed statewide. The Education Department has proposed appointing 1,600 temporary academic instructors

Hyderabad: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy holds the Education portfolio, but ironically, there is a shortage of teachers in government schools in his native erstwhile Palamuru district.

The problem is particularly acute in Jogulamba Gadwal, Narayanpet and Vikarabad districts. Interestingly, the Chief Minister’s Kodangal Assembly constituency falls under Narayanpet and Vikarabad districts. Medchal-Malkajgiri district, which is part of the Core Urban Region Economy (CURE) area, is also facing a shortage of teachers.

The teacher shortage is severe in mandals such as KT Doddi, Gattu, Rajoli, Aiza, Gadwal and Manavapadu in Jogulamba Gadwal district. More than 1,000 teachers are required across these four districts. In addition, there is a shortage of 600 Urdu-medium teachers across the State.

Given the shortage, teaching and learning activities in government schools are not progressing as expected. While students are attending classes, there are not enough teachers to teach them.

To address the issue and ensure that schools have adequate numbers of teachers, the Education Department has decided to appoint 1,600 academic instructors (Vidya Volunteers) on a temporary basis to conduct classes. A proposal has already been submitted to the government, seeking approval for the appointment of academic instructors.

School Education Director Dr E Naveen Nicolas said academic instructors would be recruited as soon as the department receives a nod from the Finance Department.
