Hyderabad: Even as a majority of IT companies have opened up their offices for employees, many are slowly trickling back to work while some are looking at a flexible working culture.
From employees seeking incentives to get back to a physical office space to a few demanding a two or three-day work-from-office-culture, the idea of the workplace is seeing a paradigm shift. When compared to the pre-pandemic era, employees’ idea about the workplace is entirely different today.
“When in March last year, our company announced work from home we thought it would not last for more than a month and it got dragged on to 18 months. In the last 18 months, some of us have moulded our work culture to suit the WFH model and some of us have had to make big changes in our home setting to accommodate this. Now, companies want us to come back and we will have to again re-align our work culture to suit this new scenario,” says Arun Kumar, an IT employee with a big multi-national company in Hyderabad.
IT employees across the city are faced with three major issues – one set of employees have gone back to their native town and are seeking incentive to come back to Hyderabad, another set have school-going children or infants at home and are sceptical to leave them in any playschool or crèche and one more set are employees who would like to come back to the office but are seeking flexible model wherein they can work from office two or three days a week and rest do WFH.
“Our company has not mandated us to come back to the office immediately but has issued a circular saying that the offices are open and you can come whenever you need or required. Who will go back to the office will depend on one’s manager or team lead and a few employees are keen to go back but are looking at a hybrid model,” says Sowjanya, 30-year-old techie.
“I have a school-going child at home and I am still sceptical about sending her to physical classes. So considering multiple issues in the team, we decided upon a rotation system so that each of us attends office only twice a week,” says PK Chaitanya, an IT employee, and mother of a 5-year-old.
According to the Workers Preference Barometer survey conducted by JLL India about 91 per cent of employees want flexible working hours whereas 75 per cent of employees want to work from the office at least once a week.
The survey also mentioned that at least 41 per cent of employees are craving for real human interactions with colleagues, while 79 per cent of employees want to work from home once a week.
