Do you have the habit of sleeping with your laptop? You may or may not agree with the question but the fact remains that smart phones, laptops, tablets and their uses have indomitably woven their way into our daily lives. After all, who likes to binge watch episode after episode of their favourite sitcom siting straight up on a desk? Not forgetting the fact that our jobs have become more demanding these days that we end up staring at computer screens for hours at a time.

It’s extremely common to see people working on them while traveling, especially in cabs. However, contradicting its own name, a laptop isn’t supposed to be on your lap. This is because they tend to emit electromagnetic frequency (EMF) radiation which is very harmful for the human body.

What is EMF radiation? It simply means the waves of the electromagnetic field, radiating through space, carrying electromagnetic radiant energy. This radiant energy is not just harmful, but if one is exposed to it for a longer time than expected, it can be deadly.

The most prominent health hazards associated with laptops are possibly skin, testicular and ovarian cancers. People use laptops mostly while they are placed on the lap or stomach. But by doing so, the risk of male infertility caused by radiation becomes very high. If you are a man who wants to protect your reproductive health, this should be taken as a subtle hint.

Women cannot be exempted from the bad effects as well as it’s not only the radiation that they need to be concerned about. Laptops generate a great amount of heat when in use and that heat is capable of causing serious damage to the tissues, leading to “erythema ab igne”, which is also known as “toasted skin syndrome”. This is a skin disease wherein the skin develops a permanent reddish-brown pigmentation.

In the case of pregnant women, it increases the risk of miscarriages. Moreover, there’s a high possibility of an unborn baby, who was exposed to high levels of EMF radiation while being in their mothers’ wombs, developing brain tumours. Prolonged use of laptops can lead up to some other physical side effects like headaches, nausea, severe neck and back pain, blurry vision with eye dryness, insomnia and in some cases even depression!

Laptops and smartphones have become a part and parcel of our lives and doing away with them is no solution. But you can still take certain precautions to keep major problems at bay. Try placing them on a table to maintain a safe distance between yourself and the device. Another great solution is to get a laptop radiation shield that lets you use your laptop comfortably and reduce your exposure to radiation.
