Hyderabad: The State government has sanctioned 180 days maternity leave along with wages to married women engaged on contract basis in Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBVs).

An order to this effect was recently issued by the Finance department following a request from the School Education department for sanction of maternity leave for women working on contract basis in KGBVs.

“Government, after careful examination of the matter, hereby order for sanction of 180 days maternity leave along with wages, for the first two deliveries, to the married women engaged on contract basis to work in KGBVs. However, this condition is relaxed in cases of employees having less than two surviving children,” read the order.

During the maternity leave, the pay should be equivalent to the existing remuneration drawn by the eligible women employees, it said, adding that statutory benefits such as EPF and ESI and other recoveries wherever admissible should also be admissible by treating them as ‘on duty’.

The School Education department has been instructed to take further action in the matter.
