Hyderabad: To ensure quality tertiary cancer care facilities are available for free of cost to needy patients, the Telangana government in collaboration with voluntary organisations is developing crucial medical infrastructure at city-based MNJ Cancer Hospital with a cost of over Rs. 95 crore.
As part of these efforts, on Friday, which also coincides with World Cancer Day, nearly Rs. 15 crore worth of medical infrastructure at the top state-run tertiary cancer hospital was inaugurated by Health Minister, T Harish Rao.
A high-end CT scan worth Rs 7.16 crore, a dental X-ray worth Rs. 50 lakh to detect oral cancers, a 300-bed ward exclusively for patient attenders developed at cost of Rs. 3 crore and a mobile cancer screening bus worth Rs. 1crore, were inaugurated by the Health Minister at MNJ Cancer Hospital.
“Due to the heavy patient-load at MNJ Cancer Hospital, there is a definite need to upgrade medical infrastructure. As part of these efforts and to improve the quality of cancer care, Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao, has focussed a lot to improve facilities here,” Harish Rao said.
By April, the MNJ Cancer Hospital, which at present has 450 beds, will have 300 additional beds when construction work of the Rs. 65 crore new cancer care facility within the hospital campus will be complete. The new facility, which is being developed by Aurobindo Pharma in collaboration with the State government, will enhance the number of beds to 750 beds.
“We need more manpower for additional beds and for that reason, State government already has sanctioned 252 posts. About 32 senior doctors have already been appointed and equal number of recruitment of staff nurses and technical personnel was taken-up,” he said.
The State government is spending close to Rs. 15 crore for the construction of 8 modular operation theatres, which will be ready by March/April. At present, there are 3 operation theatres and the additional 8 modular operation theatres will allow surgical oncologists to take-up 5000 major surgeries and over 7000 minor surgeries annually. At present, due to 3 operation theatres, the doctors are able to conduct 1500 major surgeries and 4000 minor surgeries, which is leading to a lot of waiting time for cancer patients.
“The number of patients arriving at MNJ Cancer Hospital is rising by the day. To accommodate them, the State government has also decided to allocate 2 to 3 acres of nearby land to the hospital for future expansion,” Harish Rao said.
