Hyderabad: Come June, some select government schools will be using artificial intelligence tools to mark attendance, log mid-day meals data. These AI tools could also be used to assist in teaching English and carry out formative assessments.

The ambitious initiative will be taken up on a pilot basis in some schools in Moinabad of Vikarabad district. The selected school complexes have of high, middle and primary schools. Already, a team from the Prof Raj Centre at IIIT-H interacted with head masters and resources persons to understand the grass-root level problems.

“We will make specific plans for the technology interventions. We want to keep the technologies ready for the coming academic year. These will be short term projects of three to six months that aim to address the issues at the earliest,” said Ramesh Loganathan, Co-Innovation Professor at IIIT-H.

“A lot of manual work is involved in the data collection and feeding the same into the education portal. This data is important but is time consuming. Our idea is to see how AI-based cameras, speech recognition technologies and other tools can be used for marking the attendance, midday meals and other activities. For this, we will rope in startups or technology companies that have relevant technologies already. In some cases, we will build new technologies for which research is on,” he said.

The New Education Policy stipulates formative assessment of students. Teachers need to evaluate the students every week and prepare a report. “Experienced teachers can assess who is grasping the content by observing students’ body language, expressions, attentiveness and questions they ask. We will use an AI-based model to assess the students on similar attributes. It will also generate a report which teachers can use to plan additional support to students. The teacher can further validate the recommendations,” explained Loganathan.

“We have a technology for teaching spoken languages. That is something we have already started building. We are wiring it to the high school curriculum. For each lesson in English, the system will speak for the class or individual students to repeat. Based on how students perform, it will suggest corrections. The same can be used for teaching other languages too,” he said about the pilot planned to put technology to use for solving problems at the ground level.
