Hyderabad: The area under cultivation must be expanded to improve the availability of vegetables, which are currently in short supply in the State, and farmers should take the lead, said K Surendra Mohan, Secretary, Telangana Agriculture department.
Addressing an event organised by the Sri Konda Laxman Telangana State Horticultural University and the Horticulture department here on Tuesday, Mohan said the government’s objective is to enhance vegetable cultivation from the current one lakh acres to five lakh acres over the next five years in the State.
He called for the expansion of vegetable cultivation to be undertaken as a mass movement.
SKLTGHU Vice Chancellor Dr Danda Rajireddy said discussions regarding local vegetable requirements, as well as demand-supply dynamics, should be held in every village.
By adopting modern cultivation technologies, farmers could achieve superior yields and ensure that farming becomes a truly profitable enterprise, he added.
During the event, training on vegetable cultivation was extended to “Vegetable Volunteers” selected from primary agricultural cooperative societies.
