Hyderabad: Assembly Speaker G Prasad Kumar on Monday constituted a 13-member Select Committee on the Telangana Hate Speech and Hate Crimes (Prevention) Bill, 2026, with Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar as its Chairman.
The Select Committee has been asked to submit its report to the House on or before the concluding day of the Monsoon Session, 2026.
The Telangana Assembly on March 30 referred the Telangana Hate Speech and Hate Crimes (Prevention) Bill, 2026 to a Select Committee following objections and suggestions from members across party lines. The Bill was introduced by Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar on behalf of Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy.
Apart from the BRS, BJP and AIMIM, the Congress ally CPI had also opposed the Bill. CPI member Kunamneni Sambasiva Rao had even demanded the withdrawal of the Bill, questioning provisions that could hold an entire political party accountable for statements made by individual members.
However, the Select Committee was not constituted then. It has now been constituted and announced on Monday.
