Telangana athlete Sriteja rewrites heptathlon record

Telangana’s Tholem Sriteja won gold in the women’s heptathlon at the 37th South Zone Junior National Athletics Championship in Puducherry, scoring 4,965 points to break the previous under-20 record of 4,817 points set in 1994

Hyderabad: Tholem Sriteja of Telangana set a new record in the women’s heptathlon, clinching the gold medal with 4,965 points at the 37th South Zone Junior National Athletics Championship in Puducherry.

The tribal athlete from Bhadradri-Kothagudem eclipsed the previous record of 4,817 points in the girls’ under-20 heptathlon, set by Sumavathi of Karnataka in 1994.

Sriteja was one of the finds of SAI athletics coach Nagapuri Ramesh, who has also coached Olympians Sathi Geetha and Dutee Chand, among other athletes.
