Hyderabad: With the objective of achieving ‘Aarogya Telangana’, numerous reforms were initiated in the health sector by the State government in Telangana over the last six years. Continuing with its efforts to instill new confidence in the public health system among people, the State government allocated Rs 6,295 crore for the Medical and Health department in the 2021-22 budget to strengthen the government hospitals. During the previous budget for 2020-21, about Rs 6,185 crore were allocated.
Since the State formation, the Telangana government took several novel initiatives including setting up 25 exclusive government diagnostic centres across the State to cater to the needs of the poor for the first time in the country. Further, the government had increased the dialysis centres from three in 2013-14 to 49 centres in 2020-21 in the public sector. On average, 10,500 people are being treated in these centres annually. The Telangana Government has also set up 22 new virology labs.
With the increase in the number of patients during the Corona pandemic, the government immediately sprung into action and established the Telangana Institute of Medical Sciences (TIMS) on a war-footing. The required facilities like beds and oxygen were provided immediately during the pandemic.
In yet another novel initiative, the State government established 224 Basthi Dawakhanas in the State providing 196 varieties of medicines and conducting 56 types of diagnosis tests free of cost. This is a first-of-its-kind initiative in Telangana in more than five decades for the urban poor which provided them with access to quality health care in their vicinity.
