Nalgonda: A man set himself ablaze on the premises of the One Town Police Station in Nalgonda on Monday night after police seized his vehicle during a drunk driving check.
The individual, identified as R. Narsimha, sustained severe third-degree burns and is currently undergoing treatment at a government hospital. His condition is said to be improving.
According to police, a routine drunk driving check was being conducted in Nalgonda town on Monday night. Narsimha, who was riding a motorcycle, was stopped and subjected to a breathalyser test, which showed a Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) of 155 mg/100 ml, significantly above the permissible limit. The police subsequently seized his vehicle.
Narsimha reportedly argued with the police officers at the spot. A short while later, he entered the premises of the police station. A home guard, Praveen, who noticed him, asked for his identity. Narsimha, still in an inebriated condition, shouted at the officers, questioning how the police could register a drunk driving case against him.
Suddenly, he poured petrol on himself and set himself ablaze. The home guard tried to intervene and suffered burns on his hands while attempting to stop him.
Other police personnel present at the station rushed to the scene, used a blanket to douse the flames, and immediately shifted Narsimha to a hospital.
