Hyderabad: Stage is set for the launch of Covid vaccination drive for youngsters aged between 15 years and 18 years in Telangana from Monday. The preparations to administer Covid vaccines at designated government Covid vaccination centres in districts and areas under Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) have been completed by the State Health Department.
There are 22,78,683 eligible beneficiaries in Telangana between 15 years and 18 years who will have to receive 45.57 lakh first and second dose of Covid vaccines in the coming months. All the youngsters who are born during or before 2007 are eligible to receive Covid vaccine free of cost at government Covid vaccination centres, Director of Public Health (DPH) Dr G Srinivasa Rao said on Sunday.
The beneficiaries will receive Covaxin and a dosage of 0.5 ml will be administered on every dose, which is similar to the adult dosage. The registrations to book a slot for getting vaccinated started from Saturday (January 1, 2022) in CoWIN portal.
“In areas under GHMC and other 12 municipal corporations, the beneficiaries will be given vaccination only after registration through CoWIN portal. In rest of the districts of Telangana, beneficiaries can simply walk in at the vaccination centres, register themselves and get vaccinated on the spot,” Dr Srinivasa Rao said.
For the safety of the youngsters, considered as a very sensitive age group, the vaccines will be administered only at Primary Health Centres (PHCs), Urban Primary Health Centres (UPHCs), Community Health Centres (CHCs), Area Hospitals, District Hospitals and Tertiary Hospitals where qualified doctors and support staff are present.
“For added safety, the beneficiaries have to be accompanied by their parents at the vaccination centres and will have to wait for 30 minutes after getting vaccinated. Qualified doctors will be available to provide free consultation, in case of any health related complications arise among the beneficiaries,” the DPH said.
The State Health Department will conduct separate sessions for youngsters at the government Covid vaccination centres and they will not be allowed to mingle with the ongoing Covid vaccination drive for adults above 18 years. The special sessions will have separate counters and exclusive vaccinators to administer Covaxin to youngsters.
The beneficiaries after getting administered with the vaccine will have to wait for at least 30 minutes so that the attending doctors and other healthcare workers can observe Adverse Events Following Immunisation (AEFI). The adolescents who receive the first jab of Covaxin will have to get their second jab after a gap of 28 days.
