Telangana explores NCAA-inspired collegiate sports model to build pathway for athletes

Telangana is exploring an NCAA-inspired collegiate sports ecosystem to create a structured pathway for athletes from schools to universities and elite competition. Hyderabad: The Government of Telangana is exploring the development of a structured collegiate sports ecosystem on the lines of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) model of the United States, with the objective of creating a seamless pathway for talented athletes from schools to universities and ultimately to national and international sporting excellence.

As part of this initiative, the Sports Authority of Telangana (SATG), in collaboration with the U.S. Consulate General, Hyderabad, organised two knowledge-sharing sessions with Mr. Kevin Lennon, former Senior Vice President for Policy and Governance at the NCAA, at the Gachibowli Sports Complex on Thursday. More than 125 stakeholders representing the sporting and educational sectors participated in the deliberations.

Mr. Kevin Lennon, who served the NCAA for nearly four decades and retired in 2025 as its longest-serving national office employee, shared his extensive experience in collegiate sports governance, athlete development, academic eligibility systems, scholarship structures and institutional partnerships that have contributed to the success of the American collegiate sports model.

The first session, titled “Learning from the American Sports Ecosystem: A Roadmap for Telangana’s Sporting Future,” brought together senior representatives from residential educational institutions, universities, sports associations, athlete development organisations, sports entrepreneurs and distinguished sportspersons.i Discussions focused on creating a coordinated framework integrating school sports, university competitions and elite athlete development.

Addressing the gathering, Shri Jayesh Ranjan, IAS, Special Chief Secretary to the Government of Telangana (Sports), observed that the State possesses abundant sporting talent and world-class infrastructure. He emphasised the need for an organised system that enables athletes to progress systematically from school-level participation to university sports and onward to national and international competitions.

He stated that the Government would work closely with the U.S. Consulate General, Hyderabad, and all stakeholders to develop a suitable collegiate sports framework for Telangana.

The second session, “Understanding the NCAA and Collegiate Sportsi Model,” witnessed participation from approximately 150 coaches, sports administrators, representatives of State sports associations, private academies, clubs and physical education professionals. Mr. Lennon explained the NCAA’s governance structure and highlighted best practices relating to athlete welfare, academic performance, recruitment processes, scholarships and sports administration.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. A. P. Jithender Reddy, Advisor to the Government of Telangana on Sports Affairs and President of the Telangana Olympic Association, underscored the importance of collaboration among sports associations, academies, educational institutions and coaches for the successful implementation of a collegiate sports system. He assured the full support of the Telangana Olympic Association in developing such a framework inpartnershiplol with the Sports Authority of Telangana.

The deliberations concluded with a broad consensus that Telangana should move towards a comprehensive school and collegiate sports structure inspired by the NCAA model, suitably adapted to local requirements and developed through active participation of educational institutions, sports associations, academies and other stakeholders. The Sports Authority of Telangana will initiate consultations with various stakeholders to prepare a framework for consideration by the State Government.

Dr. A. Sonibala Devi, IFS, VC &MD of SATG, thanked the U.S. Consulate General, Hyderabad, for facilitating the visit and stated that the interactions had generated valuable insights for strengthening the sports ecosystem in Telangana. She noted that SATG would work towards translating the recommendations into actionable proposals aligned with the State’s vision of preparing Telangana athletes for the 2036 Olympic Games.

Among those present were Olympian Saina Nehwal, Olympian Satti Geetha, Dronacharya Awardee Ismail Baig, Telangana Olympic Association Secretary Shri T. Malla Reddy, senior officials of the Sports Authority of Telangana, representatives of educational institutions, sports associations, academies and other stakeholders.
