Hyderabad: Amid strong indications that municipal elections will be held in the first week of February, the Telangana government on Wednesday finalised reservations for municipal wards, Chairpersons and Mayors. The notification for the elections is expected over the next two weeks.
Municipal Administration Secretary TK Sreedevi issued the reservation orders during the last two days. The allocations were made based on the 2011 Census for SC and ST quotas, the Backward Classes Dedicated Commission’s report for BC reservations, and the statutory mandate of 50 per cent reservation for women under the Telangana State Municipalities Act, 2019.
Reservations have now been fixed for 121 municipalities and 10 municipal corporations. According to official sources, the State Election Commission (SEC) is preparing to issue the election schedule for 117 municipalities and six municipal corporations. Elections to the remaining urban local bodies remain stalled over pending legal and administrative complications.
The SEC has already released the final electoral rolls. Telangana now has 52.43 lakh registered urban voters including 25.62 lakh male, 26.8 lakh female, and 640 third-gender voters. With reservations locked and voter lists finalised, the stage is set for the urban local body polls.
