Hyderabad: Summer is not an easy time for Fire and Rescue Services.

Even before the Bhoiguda blaze, the personnel were already on alert following the rise in temperatures and small incidents of fires reported from across the State.

The department, as an annual practice, issues directions to all fire stations across the State to battle summer fire incidents. Usually there is a rise in fires due to electrical short circuits in summer because the load on electric switches boards and cables goes up due to extensive use.

Regional Fire Officer V Papaiah said instructions were issued to firemen in the beginning of March to check the functioning of their communication systems and to immediately take up repairs of fire tenders, if needed.

“We ensure that all fire tenders are serviced before summer every year to avoid problems. All vehicles are checked and kept in good condition to reach the fire site at the earliest. Any delay can mean loss of life or more property damage,” he said, adding that there are about 135 fire stations and 260 fire tenders in Telangana.

“A few years ago, we added motorcycles equipped with water mist cylinders to rush to the spot before the big fire tenders reach,” he said.

Public told to take precautions

In view of the rise in temperatures and increase in number of calls of fire mishaps, the Fire Department has asked the public to inform immediately on Dial 101 if they notice fire or smoke anywhere. At the same time, the department requested the citizens to take precautions to prevent fire mishaps at their establishments and houses. The department also urged the public to give way to fire tenders which are on the way to fire mishap spots and to avoid crowding the area.
