Hyderabad: Only five contestants including three from Mahabubnagar-Rangareddy-Hyderabad Graduates constituency and two from Nalgonda-Warangal-Khammam constituency, have withdrawn their nominations on Friday. Nearly 93 candidates have remained in the fray from the former constituency and another 73 candidates from the latter constituency. The polling for both these constituencies will be held on March 14, followed by counting of votes on March 17.

The filing of nominations for the biennial election to Telangana State Legislative Council from both the Graduates constituencies concluded on Tuesday where around 178 sets of nominations were filed by 96 candidates in Mahabubnagar-Rangareddy-Hyderabad Graduates constituency. Around 123 sets of nominations were filed by 75 candidates from Nalgonda-Warangal-Khammam constituency.

All the major political parties have fielded their candidates, while independent candidates too have filed nominations in a large number – mostly pinning hopes on the Second Preference votes by the graduate voters. The elections were mandated as the tenure of the sitting MLCs – N Ramachander Rao from Mahabubnagar-Rangareddy-Hyderabad graduates constituency and Palla Rajeshwar Reddy from Nalgonda-Khammam-Warangal constituency, is coming to an end on March 29. Both Ramachander Rao from BJP and Rajeshwar Reddy from TRS are seeking re-election from their respective constituencies.

Meanwhile, the number of voters to both the Graduates constituencies has increased by 27,554, taking the total number of voters to 10.36 lakh. Though the voters list was released by the Election Commission of India on January 18 this year, it had allowed graduate voters to enrol their names till last day of filing nominations on Tuesday. Accordingly, there are 5.31 lakh graduate voters in Mahabubnagar-Rangareddy-Hyderabad graduates constituency and 5.05 lakh voters in Nalgonda-Khammam-Warangal constituency.
