Hyderabad: The Telangana government is giving a massive push to strengthen medical education and tertiary healthcare facilities across the State. With Telangana successfully managing to come out of the Omicron driven Covid third wave, renewed efforts are underway to fast track prestigious projects, that include multispecialty health hubs, medical colleges and upgrading almost all major tertiary hospitals with a cost of Rs 6,000 crore to Rs 7,500 crore.
As part of these efforts, the State government is establishing eight medical colleges, a super-specialty hospital in Warangal and four multispecialty hospitals dubbed as Telangana Institute of Medical Sciences (TIMS), which will be on par with All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), in and around Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits.
The State government has set aside close to Rs 550 crore each to develop 8 teaching hospitals in Mancherial, Ramagundam, Jagtial, Wanaparthy, Nagarkurnool, Mahabubnagar, Bhadradri Kothagudem and Sangareddy, with a total outlay of Rs 4, 400 crore. Apart from that, the State government has allocated Rs 1,100 crore to develop the prestigious state-of-the-art 2,000-bed super-speciality hospital and a health hub in Warangal.
Four speciality hospitals with a minimum of 1,000-beds for the urban population in GHMC, dubbed as Telangana Institute of Medical Sciences (TIMS) will come up at TIMS Gachibowli, Chest Hospital, Sanathnagar, Alwal and Dilsukhnagar. A minimum of Rs 500 crore is expected to be spent each for the development of the four multispecialty hospitals with nearly Rs 2,000 crore.
In addition to focusing on establishing new medical colleges, a concerted effort is underway to take up developmental activities at almost all the top State-run tertiary hospitals in areas under GHMC.
Construction of new medical infrastructure is underway at almost all the major government hospitals in Hyderabad including Osmania General Hospital (OGH), Gandhi Hospital, Fever Hospital, MNJ Cancer Hospital, Chest Hospital, Erragadda and Niloufer Hospital. To improve high-end health care services for heart patients, the State government has spent about Rs 28 crore to establish CATH labs in OGH, Gandhi Hospital and even in districts including Adilabad, Warangal and Khammam. At Gandhi Hospital, an exclusive 200-bed capacity Mother and Child (MCH) health centre has been planned, apart from Rs 12.5 crore worth MRI and 7 crore worth CATH laboratory and CT scan. So far, the State government released Rs 176 crore to Gandhi Hospital of which works related to Rs 100 crore is already completed while works worth Rs 76 crore are underway.
