Sangareddy: Former Minister T Harish Rao said Pyaranagar dump yard issue will snowball into another Lagarcherla episode if the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) continued its decision to set up the dump yard here despite strong opposition from local farmers.

Supporting the farmers, who have been fighting against the dump yard at Gummadidala on Friday, Rao said that the BRS government had stopped the project when the locals opposed the government’s move. Though the locals were raising concerns over environmental and groundwater pollution, Rao said that the government was not responding to public concerns. He said that the Narsapur forest and Rayarao Cheruvu in Narsapur would get polluted once dump yard got operational since the water would flow into the lake.

The former minister accused the police of taking locals to police stations and threatening them if anyone opposed the GHMC’s move. Rao accused the GHMC of carrying out works during the night to avoid public. Assuring the locals of raising the issue in State Assembly, he said the farmers here were known for cultivating a variety of vegetables which they have been supplying to Hyderabad.

Even though Indian Air Force Academy also raised concerns over opening dump yard in its flying zone, Rao said the GHMC continued their work. He demanded that Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy stop the works immediately. The former minister said the GHMC was carrying on the works ignoring the directions of High Court. Rao threatened to intensify the stir until the GHMC withdrew the proposal.
