Hyderabad: The State government gave more than Rs 25,000 crore as subsidy to the power distribution companies to support them overcome the losses and also took the burden of Rs 9,160 crore borrowings over the past a few years. The government released Rs 10,500 crore in 2020-21 and another Rs 9,700 crore in 2021-22, apart from issuing a guarantee for Rs 7,773 crore under the Centre’s UDAY scheme.

Speaking in the Assembly on Monday, Energy Minister G Jagadish Reddy said Telangana was the only State to supply uninterrupted power to domestic, agriculture, industrial and commercial sectors. He said the government spent over Rs 34,000 crore since the State formation to develop power supply infrastructure and increased the power supply capacity from 10,000 MW to 20,000 MW.

He said rather than supporting the State, the BJP-led union government was creating unnecessary hurdles and trying to influence certain organisations against financing the construction of power projects in the State.

Replying to the issues raised by the members, the Minister asserted that there were no power cuts to any sector in the State, except for short disruptions to take up maintenance works. He also assured to ensure supply of uninterrupted power in the Old City during Ramzan festival. While about 13 new sub-stations were sanctioned to Chandrayangutta where construction of about six sub-stations have been completed.
