The Bench was hearing a public interest litigation filed in 2023 concerning recurring food poisoning cases in government Gurukul institutions operated by various State departments. In earlier proceedings, the Court had directed strict enforcement of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (2018) guidelines to ensure the supply of clean and nutritious food to students.

Advocate Chikkudu Prabhakar, appearing in the matter, filed an application bringing to the Court’s notice the latest incident at Mahatma Jyothiba Phule Gurukul School, Uyyalawada, Nagarkurnool District, where 111 students reportedly fell ill after consuming contaminated food.

He sought urgent directions for remedial action and accountability. After hearing submissions, the Court called for a detailed response from the government on the incident and the measures taken thereafter. The matter is posted for further hearing on September 3.
