Hyderabad: BRS on Thursday alleged that Telangana’s public healthcare system was deteriorating under the Congress government, with medical colleges and government hospitals facing shortages of infrastructure, medicines and essential services. BRS MLA Kalvakuntla Sanjay demanded that Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and the Health Minister address the reported shortages and complete pending works at medical colleges.

Addressing a press conference at Telangana Bhavan here, Sanjay cited the ongoing protest by students of Jagtial Medical College, alleging that they were being detained by police for seeking basic facilities. He said the college, which began functioning about three-and-a-half years ago, was yet to have a library and lacked adequate laboratories and clinical facilities.

The BRS legislator said construction of the college building was about 80 per cent complete and questioned the delay in completing the remaining works. He urged the Jagtial Collector to hold talks with the protesting students and questioned the response of the Ministers concerned.

He alleged that shortages and infrastructure problems were also affecting government hospitals. Referring to MGM Hospital in Warangal, he said portions of the building had developed problems, while medicine supplies at MNJ Cancer Hospital had allegedly been disrupted over pending payments to contractors.

Sanjay pointed to shortages of medicines and surgical supplies at NIMS and inadequate facilities at Basti Dawakhanas. He said Telangana Diagnostics had conducted around 1.5 crore tests during the previous BRS government but was now conducting less than half that number.

The BRS MLA compared the current situation with the BRS government’s expansion of medical education and healthcare infrastructure. He said 33 new medical colleges had been established during the BRS regime and four TIMS super-speciality hospitals had been initiated around Hyderabad.

He said work on the 2,400-bed multi-speciality hospital in Warangal, which was substantially completed during the previous government, had slowed down. Questioning the government’s spending priorities, he said funds were being allocated to projects such as Future City while healthcare infrastructure was being neglected.
