Khammam: Heavy rains and hailstorms that hit erstwhile Khammam damaging standing crops, agriculture produce at markets damaged and affected coal production.

Heavy rains in Sathupalli disrupted coal production at SCCL’s JVR and Kishtaram opencast mines besides removal of overburden. An average of 20, 000 tonnes of coal and about 50,000 cubic meters of soil would be excavated in the JVR OC per day but it was halted as the mine was flooded.

Dammapeta, Chandrugonda, Kothagudem, Rudrampur and Paloncha mandals witnessed hailstorms. Crops were damaged due to untimely rain in Chunchupalli, Burgampad, Annapureddypalle, Sujatha Nagar and Laxmidevipalli mandals.

At many places paddy dried in the markets and in the fields got wet. Telangana Rythu Sangham district secretary Bonthu Rambabu said that due to the negligence of the authorities, the paddy farmers were facing difficulties.

Since the paddy purchase centres in Khammam district were opened, farmers have been stranded at the purchase centres for the past 15 days due to non-supply of gunny bags on time. The purchase of paddy should be expedited as there was a possibility of untimely rains, he demanded.
