Hyderabad: The Telangana power utilities have met highest ever peak demand of 15752 MW on Thursday. The previous highest power demand of 15623 MW was met on March 8 last year.

Considering the trends, the distribution companies have initiated measures to meet the demand exceeding 17000 MW during the ensuing summer season. To meet the demand, the distribution companies (TGSPDCL, TGNPDCL) have planned to procure the power from existing long-term contracts as well as from the power exchanges.

Accordingly, whenever the rates in the exchange are less than the variable cost of thermal power plants, during certain period of the day, power is purchased from the open market.

During December and January, the distribution companies purchased power at an average rate of Rs.2.69 per unit and Rs.2.82 per unit. This is against thermal stations average rates of Rs.3.97 per unit and Rs.4.18 per unit.

This helped the distribution companies in saving Rs.196.68 crores in December and Rs.185.27 crores in January, officials said.
