Telangana: Iron age Menhir found lying in utter neglect

Nagarkurnool: An Iron Age Menhir (memorial pillar locally called as Niluvu Rayi) datable to 1500 BCE erected to commemorate the death of a significant personality revealing the funerary practices, was found lying next to River Dindi towards Kamsanpalli village in the district.
The Menhir is just 100 ft away from the road and in the state of utter neglect lying in the agricultural fields of the village under Uppununtala mandal.
Archaeologist E Sivanagireddy, who visited the site on Thursday said the granite menhir measuring 8 ft in height , 2.5 ft width and 1.5 ft in thickness, leaning towards east was prone for extinction due to active agricultural operations.
He appealed to fields owner and villagers to protect and preserve it for posterity. Local residents and farmers said that there were a good number of Iron Age burials marked with huge boulders formed into circular structures that were removed while reclamation of the lands, he added.
