Hyderabad: The Jeevandan Cadaver Organ Transplantation Programme, the flagship initiative of the Telangana government aimed at ensuring availability of donor organs from brain dead victims to needy patients, has reached a significant milestone of crossing 1,000 donations, since its launch in 2013.
Between 2013, when Jeevandan organ transplantation initiative was launched, and till date, the authorities have collected 3,802 donor organs from 1,002 brain dead victims and allotted them among needy patients based on the organ donation guidelines framed by a committee of experts.
The milestone of crossing 1,000 donations was reached recently when a 40-year-old daily wager woman from Nalgonda, Taluka Andalu, who was injured in an accident and was undergoing treatment at Kamineni Hospitals, LB Nagar, was declared brain dread by attending doctors on March 7 due to severe head injury.
The counsellors from Jeevandan and hospital conducted counselling to the relatives of Taluka Andalu, including her husband Venkanna and son Kumar, who agreed to donate her organs for needy patients. The surgeons retrieved six organs including liver, heart, two lungs and two corneas and sent them to various centres for transplantations.
The Chairman of Jeevandan Cadaver Organ Transplantation Programme, Chief Secretary, Health, Medical and Family Welfare, Telangana, SAM Rizvi thanked the families of the brain dead victims who have so far come forward voluntarily to donate organs for the cause of the needy patients.
