Hyderabad: The Telangana Union of Working Journalists (TUWJ) has urged Additional DGP (Law and Order) Mahesh Bhagwat to withdraw the case filed against Janamsakshi editor MM Rahman and to initiate action against Rajoli Sub-Inspector D Jagadeeshwar for allegedly registering a false FIR.
A TUWJ delegation met the Additional DGP on Thursday and informed him that Rahman, a native of Jogulamba Gadwal, had been reporting on the impact of an ethanol plant being established at Pedda Dhanwada, including objections raised by farmers and their ongoing agitation.
They pointed out that Rahman was in Hyderabad on June 4 and had appeared for an examination at Osmania University. However, a complaint was lodged against him by the ethanol factory management, and he was named as A2 in the FIR.
The union described this as a direct attack on press freedom and demanded the immediate withdrawal of the case.
The TUWJ also called for disciplinary action against SI Jagadeeshwar for registering the FIR without conducting a proper inquiry and solely on the basis of the complaint filed by the factory management.
