Mancherial: A reporter working with a vernacular news channel was assaulted, allegedly by Congress leaders, during counting of hundials of the ancient Sri Mallanna Swamy temple at Katterashala village in Chennur mandal on Friday evening.

Sridhar from Swathantra TV alleged that he was attacked by leaders of the Congress including Mohan Reddy and others following some previous enmity and for exposing their wrongdoings. He accused police officials of thrashing him. He staged a sit-in on the premises of the temple demanding action against the leaders and police officials.

The scribe was attacked reportedly for exposing misappropriation that occurred in the counting of income of the temple registered in view of the recent Maha Shivratri festival, drawing ire of the leaders.

He was beaten up black and blue by the leaders. It was learnt that the attack was planned as the policemen present at the shrine remained mute spectators. The assault was recorded on CCTV cameras of the temple.

Sridhar stated that he was targeted by the leaders ever since Dr G Vivek of the Congress won from Chennur segment in 2023. He said that the leaders nursed a grudge against him for unearthing their corruption. The reporter lodged a complaint with police against the leaders. Similarly, the leaders lodged a complaint against Sridhar. Investigations were taken up, police said.
