Telangana on high alert: IMD issues first ‘extremely heavy rainfall’ warning of season

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Meteorological Department has issued an extremely heavy rainfall warning for the first time this monsoon season, alerting several Telangana districts to rainfall exceeding 204.5 mm on August 15 and 16.
“Very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall”, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph are very likely to occur at isolated places in Adilabad, Kamareddy, Kumram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nizamabad, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Medak, Sangareddy and Vikarabad districts, IMD forecast on Monday evening said.
The Met Department has also issued a heavy to very heavy rainfall warning along with severe thunderstorms for August 14-16 across several districts. The affected districts include Adilabad, Hyderabad, Jagtial, Kamareddy, Kumram Bheem, Mahabubabad, Mahabubnagar, Mancherial, Medchal–Malkajgiri, Mulugu, Nalgonda, Narayanpet, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Peddapalli, Ranga Reddy, Suryapet, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Karimnagar, Medak, Rajanna Sircilla, Sangareddy, Siddipet, and Vikarabad.
Dr K Nagaratna, Head of IMD, Hyderabad, stated that a new low-pressure area is likely to form in the northwestern Bay of Bengal. “Under its influence, Telangana is very likely to receive copious amounts of rainfall until August 16, with a very good spell of monsoon showers in the coming days. Hyderabad will receive heavy rains between Wednesday and Friday,” she said on Monday.
A yellow alert (heavy rainfall) signifies anticipated rainfall ranging from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm while an orange alert (heavy to very heavy rainfall) is issued when rainfall is expected to be between 115.6 mm and 204.5 mm.
Overall, almost all parts of Telangana are expected to receive anywhere from 64.3 mm to 204.5 mm of rainfall between August 12 and August 17.
